About Us

Get to know us!
We’ve always been Progressive. It began more than 30 years ago as a small, one-doctor practice, The Kingston Animal Hospital. It always had a strong reputation for providing high-level medicine to the pets of central New Jersey. Dr. Michael Tokiwa took over ownership in the fall of 2005 with the goal of progressing the veterinary landscape one patient, one team member at a time. How? By creating an environment conducive to better approaches toward medicine, and a better life for the individuals that provide the best medicine to your pets.

By remaining true to our roots, and employing the advances in the veterinary medical field, we have grown. In the summer of 2012, we moved our practice to the Blawenburg site and practiced under the name The Animal Hospital at Blawenburg. At that time, we adopted the philosophy of Small Hospital, Big Medicine, and many aspects of that philosophy remain valid as we serve pets and the people who love them in the greater Princeton environment. We don’t carry the same big footprint as the corporate veterinary hospitals, and we are proud of that. We are small enough that we can provide a Family-like environment, and not get caught up in the bureaucratic red tape of larger facilities. We can spend more time helping guide you through a better wellness plan or medical treatment plan for your pet. Our team approach leads to better service and medicine by promoting a client-interactive approach toward pet wellness and client education. We want to get to know you and your pet and create a lasting relationship.

Additionally, we are a full-service hospital capable of providing care at a level comparable to much larger facilities. How? We are driven to continue to embrace the advancements in technology, have strong ties with mobile specialties and referral centers, and we embrace change.

Today, we continue to provide our patients with the best medical care and pet parents with our outstanding customer service, while also committing to better the lives of the people who provide that care, one patient, one client, at a time. This progressive philosophy is working and Dr.Tokiwa believes is the future of veterinary medicine.

Small Hospital. Big Medicine.

COVID changed everything, and for the veterinary profession it made some of the most underlying issues within the process come full blown to the surface. The industry already suffered from “burnout.” Overworked, underpaid, and decreased team numbers, the highest suicide rate of any profession, and struggling mental health issues. When combined with an increase in the number of appointments unheard of in the history of the industry, this led to many leaving the profession. Dr. Tokiwa made changes during this time that have led to beneficial changes for his business, your pet’s healthcare. He concentrated the needs of those providing healthcare. Doubling the team numbers, decreasing hours and providing a better work life balance for his team led to an invitation to present at the AAHA Veterinary Visionaries Game Changers virtual conference.

We can move quickly and provide our valued patients, and the people who love them, a more personalized one-on-one service. We want to get to know you and your pet and create a lasting relationship.

Big Medicine. We are a full-service veterinary hospital. We can provide everything larger facilities can (and sometimes more): from in-house blood analysis to ultrasound; from spays, neuters, and dental procedures, to tumor removal, radiology, and behavior counseling. In addition, we have very strong ties to the local 24-hour referral centers and work with specialists in making sure those pets in need get the expert care at the highest levels.
